A brief history of Medimex
Every year, Puglia Sounds produces and hosts Medimex — International Festival & Music Conference.
Launched in 2011 as a market fair with a full program of events, live shows and guest artists, in 2017 Medimex became an international festival with great live shows and a constantly updated calendar of events dedicated to the music industry and professional training.
In addition to Bari, Medimex has also been held in the towns of Foggia and Taranto.
Medimex, an event organized by Puglia Sounds that launched it for the first time in 2011 as a trade fair and expo of music innovation, since 2017 has become a “scattered” International Festival & Music Conference, that combines a number of events aimed at music professionals with a full-scale festival featuring many events for the general public. The different editions have turned Medimex into a landmark (economic and cultural) event for Italian and international music operators and businesses, music professionals and artists, an unmissable yearly appointment for that segment of the of the Italian music market that wants to get connected with the international music scene, through exchange of ideas and experiences and by sharing insights into the world of music, by networking and promoting their work.
Starting in 2018, Medimex has become a traveling event within the Puglia region. The first travelling edition was held in Taranto, from June 7 to 10, 2018, with a full calendar of events scattered in the most beautiful places of the town. In 2019 Medimex was proposed in a spring edition in Foggia followed by another edition in June in Taranto which saw a growing number of participants.
In 2020, Medimex was the first music conference to go fully digital with almost 100 hours of streamed events and a social media reach of 350,000 contacts, with a total of over 100,000 views, 1,500 users taking part in online workshops and webinars, 130,000 interactions on Facebook, 140,000 on Instagram and 50,000 on Twitter.
In 2021 Medimex brings great music back to Taranto through several events that made it memorable: workshops, showcases, Meet the Author gatherings, art camps, exhibitions. A unique opportunity to meet national and international music stakeholders, exchange experiences and sharing insights into the world of music with them and to grow together. As always, Medimex will be open to the entire population of Taranto and beyond.
Medimex 2022 marks the return of great live shows with concerts by Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds in Taranto (19 June) and The Chemical Brothers in Bari (14 July) and the return of the event to the Apulian capital where it was born in 2011. A long edition scheduled from 16 to 19 June in Taranto and from 13 to 15 July in Bari. In addition to the live shows, author meetings with the protagonists of Italian music, professional and networking activities aimed at regional and national artists and musical operators who, as they will usually host representatives of the main Italian and international festivals and cultural institutions as well as music schools aimed at those who want to get closer to the world of music and professionals, showcases of Apulian artists and numerous collateral activities.
The 2023 edition was a very successful one. It recorded a great participation in all the events, a large influx of people to Taranto and received important visibility in the media. Furthermore, more than 300 operators from the music sector participated in the professional and networking activities. The live shows that saw Echo & the Bunnymen, Diodato, The Murder Capital, Skunk Anansie, Tom Morello and The Cult alternate on the stage of the seafront rotunda were unforgettable and exciting; as well as the showcases at the Spaceport. The spaces of the University pulsate with life for professional and networking activities which brought a prestigious representation of the Italian music market to Taranto to discuss the Music Commission, support for the new generations, the live market, the recording industry, songwriting, protections and rights, funding for the recording industry and music in the time of TikTok.
